ADULT MINISTRIES
"Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves. Don't search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer."
Rainer Maria Rilke
The Adult Education Program provides a rich environment where members and friends meet and learn together through a variety of opportunities in addition to our regular Sunday morning adult gathering. Other opportunities include monthly afternoon theology study, evening classes on a variety of subjects, workshops, guest speakers, video lectures, and group discussions. Adult education focuses on five main areas:
- UCC History and Heritage
- Theology, Bible Study, Ethics
- Current Social Issues
- Personal Spiritual Development
- Family Enrichment
A variety of social groups also helps create community, as friendships form and spiritual growth is supported.
Below you will find a brief description of some of the educational and social opportunities at Spirit of Peace.

Some adults visit occasionally, and others are regular. There are no special requirements to join this group. Please join us whenever you can!
Book Group
Spirit of Peace's book group meets monthly during the school year. Participants choose their own book-of-the-month, which they read and then gather to discuss. They read a wide variety of books, including excellent fiction. They meet the second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room at the Royal Oak Apartments, 57th and Oxbow. Check the calendar link for more information. There are no special requirements to join this group, and all are welcome.
Explore Progressive Theology Study Group
This group gathers monthly to discuss challenging, cutting-edge theology. Sometimes the group listens to a lecture by video. A sampling of lecturers includes Karen Armstrong, Marcus Borg, Joan Chittister, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Lawrence Kushner and Diana Eck. Sometimes the group reads and discusses books, a section at a time. Two of the books we have recently used are “The Heart of Christianity” by Marcus Borg and "Jesus for the Non-Religious" by John Spong. This is an intellectually challenging group which includes friends from other churches in the community. Progressive Theology typically meets the second Sunday of the month at 2:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room. All are welcome!
